whilst visiting the many churches in granada, nicaragua, i noticed that the religious artworks were extremely different than that of european works. hispanic artwork in south and central america is vibrant, bright, sometimes neon. and i like it. im not really religious, but was tempted on more than one occasion to buy a virgin mary figurine, they were almost tacky and kitsch-like, but so wonderful!
this all really reminded me of baz luhrmans sets on romeo & juliet. the neon crosses, overload of candles, the statues in juliets room, and the artwork of the heart surrounded by flames. heres crediting his amazing team: production designer catherine martin and set decorator brigitte broch.
